It's just a simple copy to get help working:
copy /b symphony.hlp + /b SYMP1HLP.X@X SYMPHONY.NEW
del symphony.hlp
ren symphony.new symphony.hlp

I report that solution provided 'al warren' works.
1. Open Notepad and paste the below and name it "expand.bat" (Save with save as type as all files):
rem expand.bat
dearj x -y -vv addin1.arj
dearj x -y -vv req.arj
dearj x -y -vv trans.arj
dearj x -y -vv tutor.arj
dearj x -y -vv addin.arj
dearj x -y -vv sym.arj
dearj x -y -vv tutor1.arj
dearj x -y -vv wys1.arj
dearj x -y -vv cgm.arj
dearj x -y -vv symp1hlp.arj
dearj x -y -vv tutor2.arj
dearj x -y -vv wys.arj
dearj x -y -vv pgraph.arj
dearj x -y -vv symphon_.arj
dearj x -y -vv tutor3.arj
dearj x -y -vv xlib.arj
rem now run install
2. From cmd.exe run above saved expand.bat (It will extract all those arj files, or if you have WinRAR or 7-zip just extract everything to that folder)
3. Then run install.exe (I tried from vDos but it didn't work)
4. Run symphony.exe
If you run symphony.exe without running install.exe even then it works. I don't know if there is any difference. Help (F1) do not work.

I STILL use Symphony 3.0 for a repair services database that I [put together in 1989. Currently I'm running it on a VM in XP on a Win7x64 box.
I'm currently kicking myself in the arse because the wife told me I "need to clean out some of the old books in the office". Well, you can guess...I accidentally threw away my very pristine Symphony reference Manual (yes! the ORIGINAL one!).
If there are any kindhearted souls out there that might be able to part with one, I will gladly pay you for your time, trouble, and valuable information to get a copy of it.
PLEASE PM my on what your end would require from my end!!!
I would be MOST Appreciative!!!!

1) choose EVA,
both DOS or (command) prompt and DOSBox can install 80x43 lines.
..
2)The extension of Symphony is *.WR1
the extension lotus (2.2) is *.WK1
MS Office cannot open both.
..
Rename (SYMPHONY) *.WR1
to (LOTUS) *.WK1,
OpenOffice (4.3) can open both correctly(after renaming extension)
..
Open Office will open *.WR1 with Writer (word processor
..
N.B.
(I don't use either..I just "had a try" many years ago and still remmeber the "/" key is the 'hotkey' to open menus, and all the fuctions start with "@" (e.g. @sin()), in constrast to the "=" nowadays.

Here's how I made this work on 43 lines vDOS window on Windows 7 64-bit:
Symphony 3 works, but the lotus.set is for 25 lines. Install.exe freezes, so I cannot make another driver set.
There is a Symphony 2.2 on Vetusware, that gets deleted by F-Secure antivirus every time I unrar it. I opened it on an old XP machine that has no net and no antivirus, and was able to run version 2.2 install.exe, and used it to create a driver set 'VGA43.set'.
That v2.2 driver set works on Symphony 3.0. I copied that on my Win7-64bit machine in vDOS C:\Apps\sym3 and run 'SYMPHONY VGA43' and voila: I am running Symphony in Win7 with 43 lines and Truetype Consolas font.
Better than I used to with my Amstrad PC1512 with CGA graphics and floppies ;)

symphony.exe works with default lotus.set, but install.exe does not.
If someone could please upload either working version, or even lotus.set file that is setup for IBM VGA 43 or 50 lines.

Hi, I know this thread is very old but this might be useful if people are still playing with things like this - I know I am. This is a DOS programme - things don't just install! The ARJ files are essentially a form of ZIP archive. Use 7-ZIP or similar and having created a directory (sorry; folder) called C:\SYM3 unzip everything into it (probably best to keep the Tutor stuff as a Tutor subfolder (put all Tutor stuff in it) double click Symphony.exe and off you go....have fun.

Did anyone ever figure out what is up with the missing INS23 file? Install doesn't work without this apparently...

There is now a free beta version of Lotus Symphony for Windows from IBM! (probably expires when the final version is out, ibm did not offer details on that)

It is a text processor like Word for windows. Simply, it is an old fashioned version.

Symphony was the Cadillac of office suites, but was so expensive that only very rich people and successful corporations could afford it. I got version 2.1 by picking dumpsters and upgraded to 2.2 with a download I found a few years ago on the net. It's a fabulous hunk of engineering.

Symphony was a DOS program that was loaded entirely into memory when started. Using ALT-F10 the user could switch between the various modes of the program, which include a spreadsheet very similar to 1-2-3, a word-processor, a communications program, a table based database, a charting program, and an outliner. The program allowed you to split the screen and view these "modules" side by side. It was at this point that the user would notice that changes made in one module were reflected in others in real-time, perhaps the package's most interesting feature.

Lotus Symphony was a mainstream office product developed from Lotus 1-2-3. 123 was just a spreadsheet, but Symphony contained WP, flat database, graphics and comms software, my=uch like Works today. It also had a programming /macro language in which I was a practictioner. Ah, the memories.

This archive appears to be missing an important file - INS23, and if you try to run it Symphony.cmp (which is created by the install process)

Lotus Symphony is a spreadsheet, database and word processor - similar to MS Works, but very much spreadsheet based.
